A scatter plot shows two quantitative variables at once, one dot per runner. The least-squares line is the line that makes the sum of the squared residuals as small as possible. Its slope is the change in y for one more unit of x, and its intercept is the model's value when x is 0, both read in the crew's units. A residual is observed minus predicted, and a residual plot with no pattern says the line fits.
