Statistics Grades 9 to 12
Statistics Grades 9 to 12 is a 12-week high-school statistics course. Students join Comet and Wren as the crew organizes the community center's spring fun run, the Lantern Loop, and every week's statistics makes part of Race Day work. The course covers dot plots, histograms and box plots, center and spread with outliers, the normal model and the 68-95-99.7 rule, two-way tables and conditional relative frequencies, scatter plots, least-squares lines, residuals and the correlation coefficient, correlation versus causation, samples, surveys, experiments and observational studies, margins of error from simulation, deciding whether a model fits the data, randomized comparisons, the addition and multiplication rules, conditional probability and independence, permutations and combinations, random variables, expected value and fair decisions. Every week lists the Common Core standards it practices. Short daily lessons with checked answers, a hands-on Data Lab each week and a Saturday Track Day for the family. No accounts, apps or software needed. 100% free, start to finish.
- Display data with dot plots, histograms and box plots, and compare center, spread and shape across groups, accounting for outliers
- Use the mean and standard deviation to fit a normal model and estimate percentages, and recognize when that model does not fit
- Read two-way tables with joint, marginal and conditional relative frequencies, and fit, interpret and judge linear models with residuals and the correlation coefficient
- Tell sample surveys, experiments and observational studies apart, estimate a population value with a margin of error from simulation, and evaluate reports based on data
- Use the addition and multiplication rules, conditional probability, independence, permutations and combinations to compute probabilities of compound events
- Define random variables, build and graph probability distributions, compute expected values and use them to weigh decisions and make fair choices
