A vector has a magnitude and a direction, drawn as an arrow. Its components come from end point minus start point, and its magnitude from the Pythagorean theorem. Vectors add tip to tail, or component by component, and a scalar stretches, shrinks or flips one. The crew's rowing vector plus the water's drift vector is the path the boat really takes.
