A measure of center, the mean or the median, sums up a whole data set with a single number. A measure of spread, the range, the interquartile range or the mean absolute deviation, says how far the values scatter. The shape of the data tells you which measures fit. Two groups can be compared by their centers, measured in units of their spread.
