Week 08

Multiplying and Dividing Signed Numbers

// Repeated hops and the sign rules

Multiplying by a whole number is repeated hopping, so 3 × (-2) is three hops of -2, which is -6. Same signs give a positive product or quotient, different signs give a negative one, and the pattern of products explains why (-1) × (-1) = 1. Any fraction becomes a decimal by long division, and that decimal either ends or repeats. This week the crew scores a paper ball toss and reads the Field Day sign-up sheet.
