Friday: Signed Products Everywhere

Rocket arrives at the Numbers Desk with a list. "Repeated hops are everywhere once you look."

"The thermometer dropped 2 degrees an hour all evening. Our stair timer takes 3 seconds off for every skipped step."

"A diver at the pool goes down half a meter every second," he adds. "That is 0.5 × (-1) each second."

Raven reads the list. "What do you notice about every one of them?"

"Something negative, repeated," Rocket says. "A hop to the left, over and over."

Nova brightens. "And dividing tells you the size of one hop," she says.

"Then let us review every rule," Raven says. "Next week the seedlings start growing, and that is a different pattern."

Repeated change in everyday life

A thermometer dropping 2 degrees each hour for 5 hours changes by 5 × (-2) = -10 degrees.

A stair timer that takes 3 seconds off for each skipped step: 4 skipped steps is 4 × (-3) = -12 seconds.

A diver going down 0.5 meters each second is at 6 × (-0.5) = -3 meters after 6 seconds.

And division works backward. A total change of -18 over 6 equal steps is -18 ÷ 6 = -3 per step.

A negative divided by a negative asks how many hops: -18 ÷ (-3) = 6 hops.

The week in five lines

  • Multiplying by a whole number is repeated hopping. 3 × (-2) is three hops of -2.
  • Same signs give a positive answer. Different signs give a negative answer.
  • The pattern of products, stepping down from 3 × (-2) to (-1) × (-2), shows why (-1) × (-1) = 1.
  • Dividing undoes multiplying, and you can never divide by 0.
  • Every fraction is a division whose decimal ends or repeats.
EVERYDAY HOPS
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
The thermometer drops 2 degrees each hour for 5 hours. What is the total change?
A diver goes down 0.5 meters each second. Where is the diver after 6 seconds?
A total change of -18 happened in 6 equal steps. What was each step?
How many hops of -3 does it take to reach -18?
FOUR OPERATIONS
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Start at 20 and lose 4 points three times. What is the score?
Take two penalties of -6 away (that is (-2) × (-6)), then subtract 5. What is the result?
-8 ÷ 2 + 7 = ?
(-3) × (-3) × (-3) = ?
PUT THE STEPS IN ORDER TO SOLVE 4 + 3 × (-2) - (-5)
  • ?Rewrite the subtraction as adding the opposite: 4 + (-6) + 5
  • ?Check the sign with a hop: the answer 3 is positive
  • ?Add from left to right: 4 + (-6) = -2, then -2 + 5 = 3
  • ?Multiply first: 3 × (-2) = -6
WHY THIS EXERCISEThis order solves any problem that mixes all four operations with signed numbers.
StatementTrue or false?
A negative number times a negative number is negative.?
(-3) × (-3) = 9?
-18 ÷ 6 = -3?
The decimal for 1/8 repeats forever.?
4 + 3 × (-2) = -2?
WHY THIS EXERCISEIf all five are clear, you can score any Field Day game with signed numbers.
Try it
Find one repeated change at home today: a timer, a thermostat, a game with penalties.
Write it as a multiplication with a negative number, and say what dividing it would tell you.
Draw the diver as a vertical number line with the water at 0. Mark the depth after each of 6 seconds.

Terrific week. All four operations with signed numbers are yours. Tomorrow is Data Day with a family toss tournament.
