A triangle without a right angle still gives up its measurements. Dropping a height from one vertex shows that area = ½ab sin C, and dropping it twice shows the Law of Sines: a/sin A = b/sin B = c/sin C. The same dropped height with the Pythagorean theorem gives the Law of Cosines: c² = a² + b² - 2ab cos C. With two angles and a side (ASA), two sides and the angle between (SAS), or three sides (SSS), the crew solves the whole triangle to the nearest tenth and finds how far the buoy sits from the taped baseline.
