Wednesday: Numbers Lab: Mix It

Rocket lines up four paper cups on a tray at the Numbers Desk. "Four mixes. One of them is a fake."

Raven reads the labels. "Mix A, 1 blue and 2 yellow. Mix B, 2 blue and 4 yellow. Mix C, 2 and 2. Mix D, 3 and 6."

"I bet they all look the same," Rocket says, already reaching for the spoon.

Nova glides over the cups. "Before you pour, predict. Which cup will not match the others?"

Rocket stops. "Hmm. Three of them come from the same ratio. One does not."

"What do you notice when you write them as ratios?" Raven asks. Rocket writes 1:2, 2:4, 2:2, 3:6.

"Mix C," he says. "Now let me pour."

Your mission

Mix four batches of green from the crew's table. Predict first, then pour, then compare the colors.

Three batches should match. One should look different. Your ratios tell you which one before the paint does.

  • Water-based paint in two colors, blue and yellow
  • A spoon for each color, four paper cups and a tray
  • A marker to label the cups, paper to test the colors, and your Numbers Notebook
Safety first
A grown-up picks the spot. Pour over a tray or a sink, and wipe spills right away so no one slips.
Use water-based paint only. Nothing from the lab is tasted, and everyone washes hands after.
Keep cups and spoons away from children under three and from pets.
  1. Label the cups A, B, C and D.
  2. Measure level spoons. Put 1 blue and 2 yellow in A, 2 blue and 4 yellow in B.
  3. Put 2 blue and 2 yellow in C, and 3 blue and 6 yellow in D. Stir each one.
  4. Dab a spot of each mix on paper, side by side, and label the spots.
  5. Record every spoon count in your data table. Write each mix as a ratio.

THE CREW'S MIXES
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which of the crew's mixes is a different green from the rest?
How many spoons of paint are in Mix D in all?
Mix A is 1 blue for every 2 yellow. A big batch uses 10 spoons of yellow. How many spoons of blue?
READ THE DATA TABLE
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Mix B is 2 blue and 4 yellow. A batch three times as big uses 12 yellow. How many blue?
Which ratio is equivalent to 1:2?
How many spoons of paint did the crew use for all four mixes together?
StatementTrue or false?
1:2 is the same ratio as 2:4.?
1:2 is the same ratio as 2:2.?
1:2 is the same ratio as 3:6.?
2:2 is the same ratio as 3:3.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEMix C is 1:1, and 1:1 is a different green from 1:2. The numbers tell you before the paint dries.
Mix A is 1 spoon of blue for every 2 spoons of yellow. With 4 spoons of blue, how many spoons of yellow? Type the number.
WHY THIS EXERCISEScaling a mix up is the whole job of equivalent ratios.
Try it
Make Mix E with a ratio of your own, like 3 blue to 4 yellow. Predict whether it matches any cup.
Pour it, dab it on the paper and check. Write E in your table as a ratio.
Sketch your five paint spots in a row. Under each one write its ratio and circle the matches.

Careful pouring. Tomorrow Raven opens her lemonade log and the crew checks four stations.
