Thursday: Raven's Lemonade Log

Raven opens her notebook to a page titled Lemonade Log. "Every station mixes its own pitcher."

"My recipe is 3 cups of water for every 1 cup of lemon juice. Water, lemon juice and a little sugar."

Rocket reads the log. "Relay used 6 and 2. Hoops used 9 and 3. Sack hop used 4 and 2. Puzzle used 3 and 1."

"They all followed the recipe," he says. "The numbers are all bigger or the same."

Nova hums. "Bigger is not the question. For each station, how much water goes with 1 cup of juice?"

"What do you notice about Sack hop?" Raven asks. Rocket divides. "4 to 2 is 2 to 1. That pitcher is extra sour!"

Read the log

These numbers are the crew's own Field Day log, written by Raven. The recipe ratio is 3:1, water to lemon juice.

To check a station, find an equivalent ratio with 1 cup of juice. 6:2 is the same as 3:1, so Relay is right.

A tape diagram: Water is 3 boxes and Lemon juice is 1 box, each box worth 2 cups

The tape diagram shows the Relay pitcher. Each box is worth 2 cups, so 3 boxes of water make 6 cups and 1 box of juice makes 2.

CHECK THE STATIONS
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which station did not follow the 3:1 recipe?
Which pitcher is the most sour, with the least water for each cup of juice?
The recipe is 3 cups of water for every 1 cup of lemon juice. For 5 cups of juice, how many cups of water?
The recipe is 3 cups of water for every 1 cup of lemon juice. With 12 cups of water, how many cups of juice?
FIX THE SACK HOP PITCHER
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Sack hop has 2 cups of juice. At the recipe ratio 3:1, how many cups of water should it have?
Sack hop has 4 cups of water and 2 cups of juice. How many cups of water must be added to reach 3:1?
Which ratio is equivalent to 3:1?
Cups in the Hoops pitcher in all (water plus juice)
Cups of water for 4 cups of juice at the recipe ratio 3:1
Cups of juice for 21 cups of water at the recipe ratio 3:1
Cups of water in the Relay pitcher for each 1 cup of juice
StatementTrue or false?
6:2 is the same ratio as 3:1.?
4:2 is the same ratio as 3:1.?
9:3 is the same ratio as 3:1.?
3:1 is the same ratio as 12:3.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEChecking a ratio against the recipe is how the crew keeps every pitcher the same.
Try it
Over the sink, pour 3 cups of water and 1 cup of lemon juice into a pitcher. Add a spoon of sugar.
Stir, then make a second pitcher with 6 cups of water and 2 cups of juice.
Both pitchers have the same ratio, so both are the same strength. Which pitcher is bigger?
Safety first
Pour over a sink or a tray, and wipe any spill right away.
Lemonade here is water, lemon juice and sugar only. A grown-up checks the ingredients first.
Draw a tape diagram for the Hoops pitcher, 9 cups of water to 3 cups of juice. Write the value of each box.

Sharp reading. Tomorrow you hunt for ratios in everyday life and review the week.
