Wednesday: Line plots with fractions

Lizzy the Lizard empties a pouch of seed pods onto a flat rock.

"I measured 12 pods to the nearest 1/8 inch," she says.

"Now I want to see which lengths are most common."

Bennie the Bear draws a long line in the sand.

"Let us make a line plot," he says. "Each pod gets an X above its length."

Lizzy places her X marks carefully, one by one.

"Look," she says. "Most of the pods are 1/2 inch long!"

Learn it: make a line plot

Lizzy's pod lengths in inches: 1/2, 1/4, 3/4, 1/2, 1/8, 1/2, 1/4, 3/8, 3/4, 1/4, 1/8, 1/2.

Draw a number line with marks for 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4.

Put one X above the mark for each pod.

SentenceTrue or false?
2 pods are 3/4 inch long.?
No pods are 5/8 inch long.?
More pods are 1/4 inch than 1/2 inch.?
3/4 - 1/8 = 5/8?
WHY THIS EXERCISEThere are 4 pods at 1/2 inch and 3 at 1/4 inch.
Try it
Find 8 pencils, crayons or sticks.
Measure each one to the nearest 1/4 inch.
Write each length in a list.
Make a line plot with an X for each length.
On paper, draw your own line plot of 8 measurements in fourths of an inch.

Wonderful plotting! Tomorrow Chris tells a story about sharing water fairly.
