Thursday: The beaker puzzle

Chris the Coyote settles by the campfire ring and opens his satchel.

"Tonight's story is about Lizzy's beaker puzzle," he says.

"Lizzy had 8 beakers, all the same size, lined up on a bench."

"Each one held a different amount of pond water for her experiments."

"Some had 1/8 liter, some 1/4, some 1/2, and one had 3/4."

"Lizzy wanted every beaker to hold the same amount."

"So Bennie helped her pour them all together and share the water fairly."

Story: Share the water fairly

Lizzy's beakers in liters: 1/2, 1/8, 3/4, 1/4, 1/2, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2.

First, find the total water. Multiply each amount by its number of X marks, then add.

The total is 3 liters.

Then share it into 8 equal parts: 3 ÷ 8 = 3/8 liter each.

SOLVE IN STEPS
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Lizzy walks 1.5 kilometers, then 800 meters more. How many meters in all?
A jug holds 2 liters. Lizzy pours out 3 cups of 250 milliliters. How many milliliters are left?
An appleBennie has 3 pounds of apples. He packs bags of 8 ounces. How many bags?
SentenceTrue or false?
The total water is 3 liters.?
Shared fairly, each beaker holds 3/8 liter.?
Only one beaker holds 3/4 liter.?
1.5 kilometers = 150 meters?
WHY THIS EXERCISE1.5 kilometers is 1.5 × 1,000 = 1,500 meters.
Try it
Pour some water into 4 cups of the same size, but not evenly.
Now pour water between the cups until they all look level.
You shared the water fairly, just like Lizzy did!
◇ MEASURE AND CONVERT TOGETHER
Each of you picks an object in the room.
Measure it in centimeters.
Change the length to meters and say it out loud.
Whose object is longer? Check by comparing the two numbers.

What a puzzle! Tomorrow Freddy hosts a measuring review game.
