Tuesday: Customary units

Lizzy the Lizard spreads a long rope across the meadow.

"This rope is 2 yards long," she says. "I want to split it into 9 inch pieces."

Bennie the Bear sets down his basket.

"First we change yards to feet, then feet to inches," he says.

"One yard is 3 feet, and one foot is 12 inches."

Lizzy scribbles in her notebook. "Two yards is 6 feet. Six feet is 72 inches."

"And 72 ÷ 9 = 8," says Bennie. "You can make 8 pieces."

Learn it: customary units

1 foot = 12 inches, and 1 yard = 3 feet.

1 pound = 16 ounces.

1 gallon = 4 quarts, 1 quart = 2 pints, and 1 pint = 2 cups.

1 hour = 60 minutes.

Example: 3 feet = 3 × 12 = 36 inches.

Example: 18 inches = 18 ÷ 12 = 1 1/2 feet.

Lizzy has a 2 yard rope. How many 9 inch pieces can she make?
Bennie walks 1 1/2 hours, then 25 more minutes. How many minutes in all?
SentenceTrue or false?

6 pints = 3 quarts?
2 1/2 hours = 150 minutes?
WHY THIS EXERCISE2 pounds is 2 × 16 = 32 ounces.
Try it
Ask a grown-up for a tape measure.
Measure the height of a door in inches.
Change it to feet by dividing by 12.
Is the door more or less than 2 yards tall?
On paper, draw a gallon jug and 4 quart jugs that hold the same amount.

Fantastic! Tomorrow Lizzy plots her measurements on a line plot.
