Tuesday: Hundredths

Lizzy the Lizard finds a fallen stick on the trail. "Let us measure this one," she says.

Bennie the Bear unrolls a tape measure. "A meter has 100 centimeters," he explains.

"Each centimeter is one hundredth of a meter."

The stick reaches the 62 mark. Lizzy scribbles in her notebook.

"Sixty-two hundredths of a meter," she reads. "That is 62/100."

"And as a decimal, it is 0.62 meter," says Bennie.

Lizzy grins. "Hundredths are tiny. I will need my magnifying glass!"

Learn it: hundredths as decimals

Cut one whole into 100 equal parts. Each part is one hundredth.

A hundred grid with 62 of 100 squares shaded

62 squares out of 100 is 62/100. As a decimal, it is 0.62.

0.62 is 6 tenths and 2 hundredths. Six full columns are 6 tenths.

The second place after the decimal point is the hundredths place.

One tenth is the same as ten hundredths.

So 3/10 = 30/100. Both show the same amount.

WHY THIS EXERCISE0.07 is 7/100, not 7/10. And 45/100 is 0.45, not 4.5.
Try it
Find a ruler or tape measure with centimeters.
Measure a spoon, a leaf or a pencil in centimeters.
100 centimeters make 1 meter, so 25 centimeters is 0.25 meter.
Write each length as a decimal part of a meter.
Draw a 10 by 10 grid. Shade 0.36 of it.

Wonderful! Tomorrow we compare decimals.
