Lizzy the Lizard tips back her sun hat and peers through her magnifying glass.
"Look at this fern frond," she says. "I want to measure it."
Bennie the Bear brings a meter stick. It is painted in ten equal stripes.
Lizzy lays the frond beside the stick. It covers exactly three stripes.
"Each stripe is one tenth of a meter," says Bennie. "So the frond is three tenths of a meter."
Lizzy writes 3/10 in her notebook. "Is there another way to write it?"
"Yes," says Bennie. "We can write it as a decimal."
Cut one whole into 10 equal parts. Each part is one tenth.
Three tenths is 3/10. As a decimal, it is 0.3.
The dot is a decimal point. The first place after it is the tenths place.
The 0 before the point says there are no whole ones.
Decimals can be bigger than 1, too.
Two wholes and 4 tenths is 2 4/10, or 2.4.
