Lizzy and Bennie look at two sticks on the trail.
"I think this stick is about 9 inches long," says Lizzy.
"That is an estimate, a careful guess," says Bennie.
Lizzy measures to check. "It is 10 inches! I was close."
"Now, how much longer is it than the other stick?"
To estimate, think of a length you know.
A paper clip is about 1 inch long.
Then measure to check your guess.
Close is great! An estimate does not need to be exact.
The red stick is 10 inches. The brown stick is 6 inches.
To compare, subtract. 10 take away 6 is 4.
The red stick is 4 inches longer.
