Tuesday: Centimeters and meters

Lizzy holds up a new ruler with lots of little marks.

"These marks are centimeters," she says.

"A centimeter is shorter than an inch."

Bennie measures his notebook two ways.

"It is about 8 inches long," he says.

"And it is about 20 centimeters long! Why is that number bigger?"

Learn it: small units, big numbers

Each space on this ruler is 1 centimeter.

This bar is 7 centimeters long.

A bar above a ruler marked 0 to 10 in centimeters

Centimeters are small, so we need more of them.

That is why the centimeter number is bigger.

For long things, we use meters. 100 centimeters make 1 meter.
