Friday: Technician check

The Fix-It Bay wall is covered in cards from twelve weeks. Rocket stares at them. "We learned all of this? My head is full!"

Raven points at the first card. "What do you notice about how it started? A computer is a system." She traces a line across the wall. "Every card connects to that one."

Nova glows brightly. "Would you like a hint? You do not need to remember every card. You need to remember how they connect."

The whole course in one picture

A computer is a system of parts working together. Input, processor, memory, storage, output, power and network.

Software tells the hardware what to do. The operating system runs the device. Apps do the jobs. Files hold the work.

Networks connect computers. Wi-Fi is radio. The internet moves information in small pieces called packets.

When something goes wrong, a technician uses a method. Notice. Name it. Test one thing. Write it down. Ask.

Safe fixes are a checklist with a never list. Information is kept safe with passwords, updates, backups and a plan for tricky messages.

A designer starts with the purpose and the person. Then the parts are picked and the trade-offs balanced.

WeeksBig idea
1 to 2A computer is a system with inputs and outputs
3 to 4The processor follows instructions; memory and storage hold the work
5 to 6Parts connect through the board and ports; power makes heat
7 to 8Software, files and the internet
9 to 10The troubleshooting method and safe fixes
11 to 12Keeping information safe and designing for a purpose
CONNECT THE CARDS
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which part follows instructions one at a time, very fast?
Which part loses its work when the power is off?
What does the internet move information in?
Wi-Fi is a kind of what?
PUT THE TROUBLESHOOTING METHOD IN ORDER.
  • ?Write down what you tried
  • ?Name the problem
  • ?Test one thing at a time
  • ?Ask for help if the ladder runs out
  • ?Notice what is happening
WHY THIS EXERCISEThe method is the heart of every repair in the Fix-It Bay.

Technician cases

A technician proves skill by solving cases. Read each one. Decide what you would check or do first.

A tablet app will not respond to taps. First rung?
The video plays but there is no sound. First door?
A message says you won a prize, tap now. First step?
A neighbor wants a device for a job. What do you write first?
StatementTrue or false?
Storage keeps files when the power is off.?
A kid may open a device case to look inside.?
A backup is a second copy in a different place.?
Accessibility features help only a few people.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEThese four ideas show up in nearly every case a technician meets.
What is the first step of the troubleshooting method? One word.
WHY THIS EXERCISENoticing carefully comes before every good fix and every good design.
Try it
On paper, draw the seven parts of a computer as boxes with arrows.
Add one word to each box that says what it does.
Show a grown-up and explain the picture in one minute.

You did it, Crew Technician! Twelve weeks of cases, all connected. Tomorrow the whole crew celebrates with your Crew Technician badge.
