Food is made of large molecules: carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Digestion breaks them into smaller pieces, such as glucose and amino acids, by chewing and by chemical reactions. The body then puts those pieces back together into new molecules to build and repair cells, or breaks sugar down further with oxygen to release energy, giving off carbon dioxide and water. Atoms are not lost along the way; they are rearranged.
