Thursday: Fuel for Every System

Rocket sets out a giant paper plate. "My Fuel Plate is ready!" he says. It holds only bread, bread and more bread.

Raven giggles. "What do you notice? Is anything missing?"

Nova circles the plate. "Your body runs best on a mix," she says. "How many food groups can you spot?"

Rocket grabs his crayons. "Plate, version two, coming up!"

Eat a mix

Food gives your body nutrients, like vitamins and minerals.

Nutrients help you grow, think, play and feel your best.

Eating from different food groups gives you different nutrients.

About half of what you eat each day should be fruits and vegetables.

  4. Split the other half. Draw a grain in one part and a protein food in the other.
  5. Add a cup of water on the side.
Oats and rice are ____.
Eggs and beans are ____ foods.
Carrots and peas are ____.
FOOD'S TRIP FROM THE SUN TO YOU
  • ?Sunlight shines on a plant.
  • ?The plant grows a carrot.
  • ?Your cells use the energy to move and grow.
  • ?You eat the carrot.
  • ?Your body digests the food.
WHY THIS EXERCISEFood energy starts with the Sun, passes through plants and powers your cells.
For a grown-up
Keep food talk about variety and fuel, not body size.
Children with food allergies or special diets: ask a doctor or nurse for guidance.

Delicious thinking! Tomorrow we put sleep, movement, water and food together to design a healthy day.
