Rocket unrolls his Healthy Day plan. "Ten minutes of sleep and five hours of jumping!" he says proudly.
Raven raises an eyebrow. "What do you notice? Does it meet the goals we learned?"
Nova projects a checklist in the air. "Engineers test a plan against criteria," she says. "Try it."
Rocket laughs. "Okay, my plan needs a second draft!"
Engineers solve problems by designing. First they define the problem.
Criteria are what the design must do to be a success.
Constraints are limits, like time or materials.
Our problem: design a healthy day for Rocket.
| Criteria: the plan must... | Body systems it helps |
|---|---|
| Include 9 to 12 hours of sleep | Brain, heart, immune system |
| Include 60 minutes or more of movement | Heart, lungs, muscles, bones |
| Include water through the day | Blood, skin, digestion |
| Include meals with a mix of food groups | Muscles, bones, every cell |
| Include handwashing before meals | Body defenders |
| Constraints: the plan must fit... |
|---|
| Only 24 hours in a day |
| Time for school, chores and fun |
| Activities that are safe and use things at home |
| Rocket's first draft | Does it meet the criteria? |
|---|---|
| 10 minutes of sleep | ? |
| 5 hours of jumping and no breaks | ? |
| Water at every meal | ? |
| Washing hands before lunch | ? |
Excellent engineering! Tomorrow is our final Body Lab Day. You will make a Body Lab Report.
