Thursday: Straps and the Yawn Test

Rocket buckles his helmet. The strap hangs loose like a jump rope.

"Done!" he says.

Raven tugs the strap gently. "What do you notice? How many fingers fit under it?"

Rocket tries. Four fingers slide right in.

Nova hovers near the loose strap. "Count again after the strap is snug," she says.

Step 3: Buckle

Center the buckle under your chin.

It is easier to adjust the straps with the helmet off.

Step 4: Side straps

The side straps should make a V shape.

The V sits under each ear, a little in front of it.

A slider on the strap moves to make the V. A grown-up can lock it.

Step 5: Chin strap

Buckle up. Tighten the strap until it is snug.

No more than one or two fingers should fit under the strap.

Step 6: The yawn test

Open your mouth wide, like a big yawn.

The helmet should pull down on your head.

If it does not, the chin strap needs tightening.

Four fingers fit under Rocket's chin strap. Is it right?
What shape do the side straps make?
You open your mouth wide. What should the helmet do?
Which test checks the chin strap with a wide open mouth?
WHY THIS EXERCISEIn the yawn test, a snug helmet pulls down on your head.
The buckle goes in the center under your ____.
At most, one or ____ fingers fit under the chin strap.
Try it
Make a V with two fingers. Hold it under one ear.
That is the shape the side straps make.
Now open your mouth in a big yawn. Feel your face move.
Safety first
A grown-up tightens straps and locks sliders.
A snug strap is firm, not painful. Tell a grown-up if it pinches.
No helmet? Practice the V and the yawn without one.
In your Bike Shop Notebook, draw a helmet from the side. Show the strap V and the buckle.

Strap stars! Tomorrow we learn how to care for a helmet and list helmet criteria.
