Friday: Week 6 Review

On Friday, Maya, Ben and Rosa share what changed this week.

Maya's family now has a code word, and her mother wrote it down somewhere private.

Ben told his class families how the school really contacts them. Rosa added a call-back rule for any bank change.

"The fakes got better," Rosa says. "So our checks have to stop depending on looks."

This week in five lines

  • Criminals use generative AI to make fraud more believable and to work on a larger scale (FBI IC3).
  • AI text can fix the spelling and grammar errors that used to be warning signs (FBI IC3).
  • Scammers make short clips in a loved one's voice, in a fake crisis, to ask for money (FBI IC3).
  • FBI tips: a family code word, a call back to a number you find, fewer public clips, no gift cards.
  • Generated content may not say when it is unsure, and AI tools can be attacked (NIST).
REVIEW
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A message is clean, kind and has no typos. What does that tell you?
What does a voice clone copy?
Which number should you use to call back?
Why is a chatbot's "this looks safe" not proof?
StatementTrue or false?
The FBI suggests a secret word or phrase with your family.?
The FBI says gift cards are a safe way to pay a caller.?
Scams can use fake images and video as well as text.?
Limiting public voice recordings is one FBI tip.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEThese habits work no matter how real the fake looks.
A PAYMENT REQUEST ARRIVES BY EMAIL. PUT THE CHECKS IN ORDER.
  • ?Find the sender's number in your own records.
  • ?Notice the request to pay or change details.
  • ?Pause, even if it says the matter is urgent.
  • ?Call and confirm the request with a real person.
  • ?Only then decide whether to pay.
WHY THIS EXERCISEThe order matters: the check always comes before the money.
In your own words, what is the call-back rule?
WHY THIS EXERCISEIt is the one habit that works for calls, texts and emails alike.
