// Find the gap, fill the gap
⏱ about 15 min

Wednesday: Explorer Lab: The Lopsided Sorter

Rocket draws six tools, all in blue crayon. Then he draws six plants, all in green.

"Easy rule," he says. "Blue means tool. Green means plant."

Raven holds up a green wrench. "What do you notice? Does your rule still work?"

Nova blinks. "Test it with some surprise colors," she says.

Your lab

You will train a model on one-sided cards, test it, then make the data fairer.

  • Sixteen index cards or paper squares
  • Blue, green and red crayons
  • A pencil
  • A partner or a grown-up, if you can
Safety first
Use only paper, crayons and pencils.
Keep pencil points down at the table.
Nothing goes in your mouth.
  1. Draw six tools in blue only. Draw six plants in green only.
  2. Write the label on the back of each card.
  3. Write a color rule from these twelve cards, like "blue means tool".
  4. Draw four test cards: green tool, red tool, blue plant, red plant.
  5. Use the color rule to guess each test card. Mark right or wrong.
  6. Make the training cards fairer. Draw tools and plants in every color.
  7. Write a new rule that uses shape, like "has leaves" or "has a handle".
  8. Test the four test cards again with the new rule.

PREDICT AND CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
The color rule says blue is tool. What will it guess for the blue plant?
What will the color rule do with a red tool?
Which rule should work better on surprise colors?
What does the color rule guess for the green tool?
What does the color rule guess for the blue plant?
COUNT THE RESULTS
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
How many of the 4 test cards can the color rule get right?
The shape rule gets all 4 right. How many more is that than the color rule?
Lab ideaTrue or false?
The first training cards were one-sided by color.?
The color rule worked on every test card.?
Adding cards in many colors filled the gap.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEOne-sided cards taught a weak rule. Fairer cards taught a better one.

Great lab! You found a gap and filled it. Tomorrow we hunt for gaps in data tables.
