Thursday: Gap Hunters

Rocket wants to fix the night side problem fast. "Add one dark photo. Done!"

Raven counts the training pile out loud. "Forty bright photos and one dark one."

"What do you notice about those numbers?" she asks.

Nova floats between the two piles. "Is one dark example enough to learn from?" she asks.

Balance the data

Machine learning needs lots of examples to find a pattern.

One dark photo is not enough. The model needs many dark photos too.

The crew adds dark photos of rocks, plants and tools.

Then they test again on both bright and dark test cards.

READ THE TABLES
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
How many dark photos did the crew add?
Before the fix, dark photos scored 4 out of 10. After, they scored 8. How many more?
Did the fix hurt the bright photos?
Before the fix, how many dark photos were in the training pile? Type a number.
WHY THIS EXERCISEWith only 1 dark photo, the model could not learn the pattern.

Spot the gap

Gap hunters read data tables and ask: what is missing or tiny?

A row with 0 or a very small number is a clue.

Training setDoes it have a gap?
20 rock, 20 plant, 0 tool photos?
15 rock, 15 plant, 15 tool photos?
Photos from day side only?
Kid voices and grown-up voices, 25 of each?
WHY THIS EXERCISEA 0 or a missing kind means a gap. Even numbers of each kind are balanced.
STEPS OF A GAP HUNT
  • Tap a card.
  • Then tap its spot.

A training set has 12 rocks, 12 plants and 2 tools. Which label is the gap?
How many more tools would make it 12 tools?
Try it
Count the kinds of blocks in a bin, or the colors of socks.
Is one kind missing or tiny? You found a gap.
ORDER THESE PILES FROM MOST BALANCED TO LEAST BALANCED
  • ?10 bright, 10 dark
  • ?10 bright, 7 dark
  • ?10 bright, 3 dark
  • ?10 bright, 0 dark
WHY THIS EXERCISEThe closer the numbers are, the fewer gaps the training data has.

Excellent gap hunting! Tomorrow we think about fairness in everyday life.
