Tuesday: Not Only Builders

Comet sticks the last name tag on the wall and steps back. "There. Everyone who works on SH-1."

Wren studies the wall. "What does the evidence say? Somebody is missing. The families never touch SH-1, but its answers reach their homes."

"And the base model maker," Comet adds. "We never even met them."

Teacher Owen looks in. "And what about the people who were not in the room? Who else should have a say?"

Nova draws a wider circle around the whole wall. "Would you like a hint?" she asks. "Look past the people who use SH-1 to everyone it touches."

Comet turns to you. "Reviewer, who is outside our circle?"

End users and affected people

End users use a system for a purpose. They range from experts to people using technology for the first time.

Affected people include everyone the system or its decisions touch, even people who never use it.

The general public feels AI's good and bad effects most directly.

Third parties and outside groups

Third parties are outside providers of data, models or systems. What they supply can be hard to see into.

Other groups also shape how AI risks are handled. They include trade associations, standards groups, advocacy groups, researchers, environmental groups and civil society organizations.

GroupWho it is in the SH-1 story (made up)
End usersStudents and teachers in the pilot classes
Affected peopleFamilies, and students who never use SH-1 but share classes with those who do
Third partyThe base model maker
Outside groupsResearchers or environmental groups the crew could ask about footprints
INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE CIRCLE?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A family never uses SH-1, but a wrong SH-1 answer shows up in homework at home. What are they?
A student uses SH-1 Ask to study for Biology. What is the student?
The base model maker supplies the model SH-1 is built on. What is it?
Who does NIST say feels AI's good and bad effects most directly?

Why diverse teams find more

Diverse teams share ideas and assumptions more openly. That helps them find problems and risks.

In the story, the crew worked with four teachers from four subjects. Teacher Mara's Spanish class is where the gap showed up.

A crew of only Algebra fans might never have tested Spanish at all.

StatementTrue or false?
Affected people always use the system themselves.?
End users can range from experts to first-time users.?
Environmental groups and researchers can help shape how AI risks are handled.?
Diverse teams help surface problems and risks.?
Only people who build AI have a role in it.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEMany of the people who shape AI never write a line of code.
People who use a system for a purpose are end ____.
Teams with many backgrounds share ideas more openly. They are called ____ teams.
On paper, draw two circles, one inside the other. In the inner circle, write who uses SH-1. In the outer circle, write who else it touches.

Wide thinking, reviewer. Tomorrow in the Explorer Lab you finish the model card and the register.
