Explorer Quest: Present the Recommendation

On Saturday, Comet practices her panel speech on the library steps, waving her sketch notebook.

"The hardest part," she says, "was not deciding. It was explaining why."

Wren smiles. "What does the evidence say? Every reason we gave pointed back to a week of work."

"I wonder what school will look like in ten years," Comet adds. "Study helpers everywhere? Or none at all?"

Nova hovers beside them. "Would you like a hint?" she asks. "Explain it to someone new, and listen to the questions they ask."

Wren grins at you. "Reviewer, share it with your family."

  1. AI actors include designers, developers, deployers, operators, testers, domain experts, impact assessors, procurement and governance.
  2. End users, affected people, third parties and outside groups matter too, and diverse teams find more problems.
  3. Risk combines how likely an event is with how big its consequences would be.
  4. Deciding whether AI is the right tool at all is everyone's job.
  5. The crew recommended go, with conditions, and the panel voted yes.
The recommendation on one card (made up for the story)
Recommendation: go, with conditions. A six-week pilot of SH-1 in Biology and Algebra only.
Why those classes: SH-1 got 9 of 10 in each on the crew's own test.
Why not Spanish yet: SH-1 got only 4 of 10 in Spanish.
Main conditions: no names in logs, teachers check every quiz, Check is only a second opinion, and a paper option for everyone.
◇ PRESENT THE RECOMMENDATION
Sit with a family member who has a few minutes to listen.
Read them the recommendation card above, in your own words. Take no more than two minutes.
Tell them one reason the crew trusted SH-1 for two classes, and one reason it did not trust it for Spanish.
Ask them to ask you two questions about the recommendation. Write each question down.
Answer each question as well as you can. If you do not know, say so, as the crew did with R8.
Then talk together: how might AI study helpers change school in ten years?
For a grown-up
This quest needs no device. Your student explains a made-up school decision from the course.
Ask questions you are honestly curious about. There is no wrong question.
Talk about what you hope study helpers could do for learners, and what you would want checked first.
QUEST CHECK
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Your family member asks why Spanish is not in the pilot. What is the evidence?
You do not know the answer to a question. What did the crew do in that case?
