Training, maintaining and running generative AI take a lot of computing resources and can have large energy and environmental footprints. In one study, making things used more energy than labeling things, and there is no agreed way yet to estimate these impacts. Generative AI is built from many outside parts, so problems can be hard to trace. A product should be checked for whether a broad group of people can use it.
