Friday: Impact Friday: Who Can Use SH-1?

Teacher Dev hurries into the library with a sheet from the district office. "Before you finish, look at this," he says.

"Of the 120 students in the two pilot classes, 102 can use a device with Internet at home. Eighteen cannot."

Comet blinks. "I pictured everyone using SH-1 at the kitchen table after dinner."

Wren studies the sheet. "What does the evidence say? The library laptops are only out from 9 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon."

Nova splits a bar of light into two unequal parts. "Would you like a hint?" she asks. "Ask who the plan works for, and who it leaves out."

Teacher Dev turns to you. "Reviewer, what should the panel know?"

Access

Computing can improve, harm or keep the same how people do things.

A product should be checked for whether a broad group can use it. That includes people without fast Internet and people with disabilities.

Fixing harmful bias does not make a system fair. It may still be hard for people with disabilities or people without good access to use.

The district office's count (made up for the story):

Students in the two pilot classesCount
Can use a device with Internet at home102
Cannot use a device with Internet at home18
Total120
READ THE ACCESS COUNT
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
What percent of the 120 students can use a device with Internet at home?
What percent cannot?
When can the 18 students use a school laptop for SH-1?
If homework practice needs SH-1 at night, who is left out?

The crew's access note for the model card

Access note (made up for the story)Why
Every SH-1 task has a paper option.Nobody has to use SH-1 to do the work.
Library laptops are open to any student without home access.Eighteen students rely on them.
No homework needs SH-1 after 4 pm.Laptops are not out after the library closes.
Ask the district office to check SH-1 for people with disabilities.A broad group of users should be able to use it.

Who carries the footprint?

Remember NIST's People & Planet center. A footprint lands on the planet, which everyone shares, users and non-users alike.

Outside groups also shape how AI risks are handled. They include trade associations, standards groups, advocacy groups, researchers, environmental groups and civil society organizations.

AI actor spotlight: third parties, procurement and outside groups
Third parties are outside providers of data, models or systems. In our story, the base model maker is one.
Procurement is the work of getting an AI model, product or service from an outside developer. The district office does this for Harbor Point.
Other groups, such as environmental groups and researchers, help set norms for managing AI risks.
In the SH-1 Review, the crew asks all three for information the packet left out.

Week review

  1. Training, maintaining and running generative AI take a lot of computing resources and can have large footprints.
  2. In one study, making things used more energy than labeling things. There is no agreed way yet to estimate generative AI's environmental impacts.
  3. R8 is rated Unknown and Unknown, and the crew asked the builder for information.
  4. SH-1 is built from outside parts. Problems can be hard to trace and can flow from a big shared model.
  5. R9 is rated High and Medium. A product should be checked for whether a broad group can use it.
Week reviewTrue or false?
A tool on a screen has no footprint.?
The crew rated R8 Unknown because it had no information and no agreed method.?
The base model maker is a third party for Harbor Point.?
Fixing harmful bias always makes a system fair.?
Eighteen of the 120 pilot students cannot use a device with Internet at home.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEFootprint, parts and access all decide who SH-1 really serves.
OUR WEEK, IN ORDER
  • ?We mapped SH-1's value chain and rated R9.
  • ?We traced what it takes to run SH-1.
  • ?We tallied the 30 demo-week requests.
  • ?We compared making and labeling and rated R8 Unknown.
  • ?We checked who can use SH-1 and wrote the access note.
WHY THIS EXERCISEEach step added a piece to the model card or the register.

Thoughtful work, reviewer. Tomorrow's Explorer Quest traces a supply chain at home.
