Scientists at NOAA and NASA combine temperature readings from thousands of stations, ships and buoys into one global record. That record shows Earth's average surface temperature has risen about 2 degrees Fahrenheit since the 1800s. NASA and NOAA name human activities, mainly burning fossil fuels, as the main cause since the mid-1900s, and evidence from ice cores, sea level and Arctic sea ice agrees.
