A thunderstorm is a cloud with lightning and thunder, built from moist air that is pushed up and keeps rising. Some thunderstorms make hail, strong winds or a tornado, and over warm oceans a cluster of them can grow into a hurricane. The National Weather Service tracks where and when these storms happen, issues watches when they are possible and warnings when they are happening, and teaches simple rules that keep families safe.
