Precipitation is water that falls from clouds as rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain or hail. Cloud droplets grow by bumping together, or by water vapor freezing onto ice crystals, until they are heavy enough to fall. The temperature of the air they fall through decides which kind reaches the ground, and a rain gauge measures how much arrives.
