Tuesday: Clues that explain

Hazel the Hedgehog rests under a big daisy.

Lucy the Ladybug waves from the top.

"Sometimes a writer helps us," says Hazel.

"The writer tells what a word means right in the sentence."

Lucy wiggles her antennae. "Like a little secret note!"

Ferris laughs. "Let us find those notes."

Learn it: explaining clues

Some clues tell the meaning right away.

Look for the word or, or the words which means.

Ferris reads: "The path was slick, or slippery."

The word or gives the meaning. Slick means slippery.

Read it
The Slick Path
After the rain, the path to the pond was slick, or slippery.
Lucy the Ladybug peered, or looked closely, at the wet stones.
"Be careful," she told Hazel. "The stones are slick."
Hazel moved cautiously, which means with great care.
She held on to a low branch for balance.
At the pond, they found Freddy the Frog in a jolly mood.
Jolly means cheerful and happy.
Freddy was humming and hopping from pad to pad.
"Welcome!" he said. "You made it across the slick path!"
Hazel smiled. She felt proud of her careful steps.
