Monday: Clues around a new word

Hazel the Hedgehog sits by the Story Stump with her pencil.

"I found a word I did not know," she says softly.

"So I read the words around it. They gave me clues!"

Ferris the Fox smiles. "Let us be word detectives today."

Learn it: context clues

A new word can be a puzzle.

The words around it are clues.

Ferris reads: "The hill was enormous. It took all day to climb."

He asks: What does enormous mean? He looks at the clue.

It took all day to climb. Enormous means very, very big!

Hazel's Enormous Scarf
Hazel the Hedgehog loves to knit.
One winter, she began a scarf for Bennie the Bear.
She knit and knit for many days.
The scarf grew enormous, longer than the whole Story Stump.
Bennie wrapped it around his neck three times.
"It is so cozy," Bennie said. "I feel warm all over."
Hazel giggled, but she felt weary after so much knitting.
She yawned and could barely keep her eyes open.
Bennie tucked a blanket around her, and she fell asleep.
The next day, Hazel woke up rested and happy.
