Wednesday: How characters respond

Lucy the Ladybug takes a slow breath. "In, two, three. Out, two, three."

"That is what I do when something goes wrong," she says.

Ferris the Fox nods. "What a character does next is called a response."

"Let us see how two friends respond to a splash," says Lucy.

Learn it: respond

When something happens, a character responds.

A response is what the character says or does next.

Read this: Rosie dropped her cup. She said oops and wiped it up.

Lucy asks: How did Rosie respond? She said oops and cleaned up!

The Spilled Paint
Lizzy the Lizard painted a sign for the Story Stump.
It said Story Time in big green letters.
Freddy the Frog hopped by to see it.
Oops! His foot bumped the jar of blue paint.
Blue drops splashed all over the sign.
Freddy's face fell. "I am so sorry, Lizzy," he said.
Lizzy felt upset for a moment.
She took a slow, deep breath.
Then she looked closely at the blue drops.
"These could be blue flowers!" she said.
Freddy helped her paint green stems under each drop.
The new sign was even better than before.
