Tuesday: Read the trail map

Ferris the Fox marks four places on his grid map.

They are the camp, the pond, the lookout and the hollow.

"Each square on this map stands for 1 kilometer," he says.

Bennie the Bear studies the points. "The camp is at two, three. The pond is at seven, three."

"They have the same second number," says Ferris. "So they are on the same line across."

"Then the pond is 7 - 2 = 5 kilometers from camp," says Bennie.

Ferris grins. "The grid tells us where things are and how far apart they are."

Learn it: points tell a story

Camp C is at (2, 3), and pond P is at (7, 3).

They share the same second number, so they sit on one line across.

Subtract the first numbers: 7 - 2 = 5.

So the pond is 5 kilometers from camp.

Learn it: graph a walk

Ferris walks 2 kilometers every hour.

After 1 hour: (1, 2). After 2 hours: (2, 4). After 3 hours: (3, 6).

The first number is the hours. The second number is the kilometers.

How many kilometers after 5 hours?
SentenceTrue or false?
The camp is at (2, 3).?
The pond and the lookout are 5 kilometers apart.?
The point (1, 2) means 1 kilometer after 2 hours.?
The hollow and the lookout are on the same line across.?
WHY THIS EXERCISEIn the walk graph, (1, 2) means 2 kilometers after 1 hour.

Try it
On grid paper, make a simple map of your room.
Put the door at the origin (0, 0).
Mark your bed and a window with ordered pairs.
How many squares apart are they?
On paper, draw a grid map with three places. Write each place's ordered pair.

You read the map like a guide! Tomorrow we graph two number patterns.
