Thursday: Shape families

Chris the Coyote sits by the trail sign and opens his storyteller's satchel.

"Tonight's tale is about the shape families of the forest," he says.

"The biggest family was the quadrilaterals. Every member had four sides."

"Inside it lived the parallelograms, with two pairs of parallel sides."

"The rectangles had four right angles. The rhombuses had four equal sides."

"And the squares? They had everything, so they belonged to every family."

"Ferris always said, what is true for a family is true for all its members."

Story: Families inside families

A quadrilateral has four sides.

A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides.

A rectangle is a parallelogram with four right angles.

A rhombus is a parallelogram with four equal sides.

A square is both a rectangle and a rhombus.

A parallelogram
A rhombus

All rectangles have four right angles. Squares are rectangles.
