Wednesday: Share with unit fractions

Rosie the Rabbit carries a jug with 1/2 liter of water.

"I have 3 new seedlings," she says. "Each one needs the same share."

Bennie the Bear draws a bar in the dirt and shades half of it.

"Split the half into 3 equal parts," he says.

Rosie counts the tiny parts. "Each part is 1/6 of the whole bar!"

Then she spots her ribbon. "This ribbon is 3 meters long."

"How many 1/4 meter bows can I make?"

Bennie smiles. "Each meter holds 4 fourths. So count the fourths in 3 meters."

Learn it: a unit fraction divided by a whole number

1/2 ÷ 3 means: share 1/2 into 3 equal parts.

Each part is 1/6 of the whole.

Check with multiplying: 3 × 1/6 = 3/6, and 3/6 is the same as 1/2.

Sharing a fraction makes each share smaller.

Two bars the same length: 1 of 2 parts shaded, and 1 of 6 parts shaded

Learn it: a whole number divided by a unit fraction

3 ÷ 1/4 means: how many fourths fit in 3 wholes?

Each whole holds 4 fourths.

So 3 wholes hold 3 × 4 = 12 fourths.

Check: 12 × 1/4 = 12/4, and 12/4 = 3.

SentenceTrue or false?
1/2 ÷ 4 = 1/8?
3 ÷ 1/2 = 6?
1/5 ÷ 2 = 2/5?
2 ÷ 1/3 = 5?
WHY THIS EXERCISE1/5 ÷ 2 is 1/10, and 2 ÷ 1/3 is 6.
Try it
Fold a sheet of paper in half and shade one half.
Fold it again so the half is split into 3 equal parts.
Open it up. How many parts does the whole sheet have now?
What fraction of the sheet is each small part?
On paper, draw a bar for 3 wholes. Mark every 1/4 and count the fourths.

Super sharing! Tomorrow Chris tells a garden story full of fractions.
