Tuesday: Stretch and shrink

Rosie the Rabbit stacks 8 flat stones into a little tower.

"I want a tower 1 1/2 times as tall," she says, bouncing on her toes.

Bennie the Bear rubs his chin. "Then it will be taller than 8 stones."

"How do you know without counting?" asks Rosie.

"1 1/2 is greater than 1," says Bennie. "So the product grows."

Rosie builds a new tower: one full tower of 8 stones, then half of another 8.

"Eight and four make twelve!" she cheers.

Bennie nods. "And if we multiply by a fraction equal to 1, nothing changes at all."

Learn it: times a mixed number

1 1/2 × 8 means 1 group of 8 and half of another 8.

1 × 8 = 8 and 1/2 × 8 = 4.

Add the parts: 8 + 4 = 12.

So 1 1/2 × 8 = 12, and 12 is more than 8.

TIMES A MIXED NUMBER
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
1 1/2 × 6 = ?
2 1/4 × 4 = ?
1 1/3 × 9 = ?
5/4 × 8 = ?

Learn it: times a fraction equal to 1

4/4 is equal to 1 whole.

So 2/3 × 4/4 has the same value as 2/3.

2/3 × 4/4 = 8/12, so 8/12 is the same amount as 2/3.

This is why equivalent fractions work.

2/3 × 4/4 = ?/12
3/5 × 2/2 = ?/10
5/6 × 3/3 = ?/18
WHICH PRODUCT IS GREATER?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Which is greater: 3/4 × 20 or 5/4 × 20?
Which is greater: 9/10 × 50 or 50?
Which is greater: 7/7 × 30 or 30?
SentenceTrue or false?
1 1/2 × 8 = 12?
7/6 × 30 < 30?
3/4 × 4/4 = 3/4?
9/10 × 50 > 50?
WHY THIS EXERCISE7/6 is greater than 1, so 7/6 × 30 is more than 30.
Try it
Build a tower of 8 blocks, books or cups.
Now build a tower 1 1/2 times as tall.
Count the blocks in the new tower.
Build one more tower 1/2 as tall as the first. Which towers grew?
On paper, draw 8 stones. Then draw 1 1/2 times as many stones.

You stretched and shrank numbers! Tomorrow we share with unit fractions.
