Thursday: The acorn bags

Chris the Coyote settles by the campfire ring and opens his satchel.

"One autumn, Samantha gathered exactly 1,000 acorns," he begins.

"She packed them into bags that hold 24 acorns each."

"She filled 41 bags all the way, but 16 acorns were left over."

"Those leftover acorns are the remainder," Chris explains.

"Samantha did not want to waste a single acorn."

"So she used one more bag for the extras, which made 42 bags in all."

Everyone cheers for clever Samantha.

Learn it: what to do with a remainder

1,000 ÷ 24 is 41 with 16 left over, because 41 × 24 = 984.

And 984 + 16 = 1,000.

Read the question to decide what the answer is.

How many full bags? 41. How many left over? 16. How many bags for all? 42.
