⏱ about 15 min

Saturday: Number Hunt

Samantha the Squirrel and Bennie the Bear set out with a notebook.

"Fun fact: sharing is just dividing!" says Samantha.

Bennie spots a calendar on the cabin wall. "A year has 365 days."

"How many full weeks of 7 days is that?" asks Samantha.

Bennie writes it down. "52 weeks, with 1 day left over."

"Let us find more numbers to share," says Samantha, and she scampers off.

Bennie follows with a big, warm smile.

Hunt for things to share

Look around your home with a grown-up.

Find big numbers, like pages in a book or days in a year.

Divide them by a two-digit number, like 12 or 24.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find the number of pages in a long book.
Choose a two-digit number of days, like 15 or 20.
Divide to find how many pages you would read each day.
Is there a remainder? Decide what to do with it.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
A year has 365 days. How many full weeks of 7 days?
A day has 24 hours. How many days are in 480 hours?
360 stickers are shared equally by 24 friends. How many does each friend get?
◇ SHARE IT OUT
Your grown-up picks a three-digit or four-digit number.
You pick a two-digit divisor.
Each of you estimates the quotient first.
Then divide together in chunks and check by multiplying.
Whose estimate was closer? Talk about why.
Draw how you would share 96 berries equally into 12 bowls.
For a grown-up
This week your child divided numbers up to four digits by two-digit numbers.
They estimated, took away friendly chunks, and checked by multiplying.
Ask them what a remainder means in a story problem.
Some stories need one more group, and some leave the extras out.

Great hunting! Next week Bruce helps us work with decimals.
