Tuesday: Measuring story problems

Hazel the Hedgehog and Bennie the Bear are getting ready for a walk to the pond.

"I have 2 liters of water," says Hazel. "I will pour 750 milliliters into my bottle."

"How much will be left in the big jug?" asks Bennie.

Hazel tugs her scarf and thinks. "Liters and milliliters are different units."

"Then change them to the same unit first," says Bennie. "2 liters is 2,000 milliliters."

Hazel subtracts. "2,000 take away 750 is 1,250 milliliters left!"

They set off at 2:10 and reach the pond at 2:45.

Learn it: same units, then solve

Step 1: Change to the same unit. 2 liters = 2,000 milliliters.

Step 2: Solve. 2,000 - 750 = 1,250 milliliters.

A jug marked 0 to 2 liters, with 1,250 milliliters left in it

Time works on a number line too.

Hazel left at 2:10 and arrived at 2:45. Count from 10 minutes to 45 minutes.

That is 35 minutes of elapsed time.

A number line of minutes from 10 to 50, with a dot at 45
DISTANCE AND TIME
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Hazel starts walking at 2:10. She gets to the pond at 2:45. How many minutes does she walk?
The pond is 1 kilometer away. Bennie has walked 350 meters. How many meters are left?
The whole hike takes 3 hours and 20 minutes. How many minutes is that?
A log is 2 meters and 35 centimeters long. How many centimeters is that?
MASS AND LIQUID
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Each bag of seeds has a mass of 250 grams. What is the mass of 4 bags in grams?
Hazel has 2 pounds of clay. She uses 10 ounces. How many ounces are left?
Bennie pours 1,500 milliliters of water equally into 3 jars. How many milliliters in each jar?
Hazel shares 3 kilograms of apples equally into 6 baskets. How many grams in each basket?
FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS IN MEASURING
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
Hazel walks 1/2 kilometer to the pond, 3 times this week. How many kilometers?
Bennie pours 3/4 liter of water, then 2/4 liter more. How many liters in all?
A ribbon is 0.5 meter long. How many centimeters is that?
SOLVE A MEASURING PROBLEM
  • Think about how Hazel solved her water problem.
  • Tap the steps in order.

SentenceTrue or false?
2,000 - 750 = 1,250?
3 × 60 + 20 = 180?
4 × 250 = 1,000?
1,500 ÷ 3 = 500?
WHY THIS EXERCISE3 × 60 + 20 is 180 + 20, which is 200, not 180.
Try it
Look at a clock when you start a chore or a game.
Look again when you finish.
Count the minutes from start to finish. That is the elapsed time.
Draw a number line to show your count.
Draw a number line to show a walk that starts at 3:05 and ends at 3:40.

Nice problem solving! Tomorrow we use formulas for area and perimeter.
