Hazel the Hedgehog is knitting a long, cozy scarf for winter on the trail.
"My scarf is 4 feet long," she says, holding it up proudly.
Bennie the Bear looks at his tape measure. "My tape shows inches. How many inches is that?"
Hazel pulls the pencil from behind her ear. "One foot is 12 inches."
"So 4 feet is 4 groups of 12 inches," says Bennie.
Hazel writes 4 × 12 = 48. "My scarf is 48 inches long!"
"Bigger units hold many smaller units," says Bennie. "So we multiply."
A foot is 12 times as long as an inch.
To change feet to inches, multiply the number of feet by 12.
| Feet | Inches |
|---|---|
| 1 | 12 |
| 2 | 24 |
| 3 | 36 |
| 4 | 48 |
| 5 | 60 |
Here are more units. Each row shows how many small units make one big unit.
| One big unit | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 kilometer | 1,000 meters |
| 1 meter | 100 centimeters |
| 1 kilogram | 1,000 grams |
| 1 pound | 16 ounces |
| 1 liter | 1,000 milliliters |
| 1 hour | 60 minutes |
| 1 minute | 60 seconds |
| 1 foot | 12 inches |
| 1 yard | 3 feet |
Example: 3 kilograms = 3 × 1,000 = 3,000 grams.
Example: 2 hours = 2 × 60 = 120 minutes.
