Thursday: Hazel's feather collection

Chris the Coyote props his feathered hat on his knee.

"Feathers make me think of a story," he says with a wink.

Hazel the Hedgehog collected twelve feathers that fell along the trail one windy week.

She measured each one to the nearest quarter inch and wrote the lengths in her notebook.

But the list was hard to read, so Bennie the Bear helped her draw a line plot.

They made a number line and put an X above it for every feather.

Now Hazel could see her shortest feather, her longest one, and the lengths she found most.

"A line plot," Chris says, "lets a list of numbers tell its story."

Story: Read a line plot

A line plot of 12 feather lengths from 1 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches

Each X stands for one feather.

The longest feather is 2 1/2 inches. The shortest is 1 1/4 inches.

The difference is 2 1/2 - 1 1/4 = 1 1/4 inches.

Each X on a line plot stands for one measurement.?
WHY THIS EXERCISE3 × 1 3/4 is 3 × 7/4, which is 21/4, or 5 1/4.
Try it
Collect 8 leaves, sticks or pencils.
Measure each one to the nearest quarter inch.
Make a number line with quarter inches on it.
Put an X above the line for each thing you measured.
Draw your own line plot. Circle the longest and shortest measurements.

What a collection! Tomorrow Freddy has a measuring game.
