Saturday: Number Hunt

Hazel the Hedgehog and Bennie the Bear go on a measuring hunt around the cabin.

"Let us find a rectangle and work out its area," says Hazel.

They measure the doormat. It is 3 feet long and 2 feet wide.

"That is 6 square feet," says Bennie. "And the perimeter is 10 feet."

Next they read a water jug, a bag of seeds and the kitchen clock.

Hazel writes every measurement in her notebook, each with its unit.

Hunt for measurements

Labels on jars, jugs and bags show grams, ounces, liters or milliliters.

Clocks help you find elapsed time.

Rugs, books and tables are rectangles you can measure.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find 3 labels that show a mass or a liquid amount.
Change one of them to a smaller unit.
Measure a rectangle at home. Find its area and perimeter.
Time how long it takes to tidy one room.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
5 kilograms = ? grams
A rectangle 3 ft long and 2 ft wideWhat is the area in square feet?

A line plot of 12 feather lengths in inchesHow many X marks are on Hazel's feather plot?
◇ MEASURE AND GUESS WITH A GROWN-UP
Pick 4 things at home to measure, like a spoon, a pillow and a door.
Each of you guesses the length before you measure.
Measure together with a ruler or tape measure.
Change one measurement to a smaller unit.
Talk about whose guesses were closest and why.
Draw a room in your home as a rectangle. Label its length and width.
For a grown-up
This week your child converted units, like 4 feet = 48 inches and 2 liters = 2,000 milliliters.
They used area = length × width and perimeter = 2 × length + 2 × width.
They also read line plots with fractions of an inch.
Ask them to measure something with you and change it to a smaller unit.

Great measuring! Next week Ferris leads us into the world of angles.
