Rosie the Rabbit finds a row of flat stepping stones beside the creek.
Bennie the Bear paints a number line on them, from 0 to 3 meters.
"Each of my hops is three fourths of a meter," Rosie says proudly.
She takes four big hops and lands right on the 3.
"Four hops of three fourths is twelve fourths," says Bennie. "And twelve fourths is 3 wholes."
Rosie claps her paws. "So a product can be a whole number!"
"Or a mixed number," Bennie adds. "Let us find out how."
4 × 3/4 = 12/4.
Four fourths make 1 whole, so twelve fourths make 3 wholes. 12/4 = 3.
Now try 3 × 2/5 = 6/5.
Five fifths make 1 whole, and there is 1 fifth left over.
So 6/5 = 1 1/5. That is a mixed number.
