Saturday: Number Hunt

Rosie the Rabbit and Bennie the Bear set off with a notebook and a pencil.

"Today we hunt for fractions in the kitchen and the garden," says Rosie.

Bennie holds up a measuring cup. "Look, the lines say 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2."

"I can fill the 1/4 line three times," Rosie says. "That makes three fourths of a cup!"

"And four times makes one whole cup," says Bennie.

They write a times sentence for every fraction they find.

Hunt for fractions

Fractions hide in measuring cups, spoons, rulers and folded paper.

When you find one, ask: how many groups of it could I make?

Then write a times sentence, like 3 × 1/4 = 3/4.

Try it: Number Hunt
Find measuring cups or spoons with fractions on them.
Pick one, like the 1/4 cup.
How many scoops of water fill 1 cup? Pour them to check.
Find 3 things at home that come in equal parts.
Write a times sentence for each one.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
3 × 2/5 = ?
4 × 3/4 = ?
2 × 5/6 = ?
7/8 = ? × 1/8
◇ FRACTION TIMES WITH A GROWN-UP
Each of you folds a paper strip into 4, 6 or 8 equal parts.
Take turns naming a fraction of your strip, like 3/8.
The other person picks a whole number from 2 to 5.
Multiply the whole number by the fraction together.
Draw or fold strips to check each product.
Draw one fraction you found today. Write a times sentence for it.
For a grown-up
This week your child multiplied a fraction by a whole number, like 3 × 2/5 = 6/5.
They learned that 2/5 is 2 × 1/5, so they count the unit fractions.
Ask them why the denominator stays the same when they multiply.
Measuring cups are a great way to practice at home.

Great hunting! Next week Lizzy helps us explore decimals.
