Friday: Freddy's fraction game

Freddy the Frog straightens his bow tie and leaps onto a lily pad.

"Ribbit! Welcome to the fraction pond," he croaks with a grin.

"Every lily pad has a fraction puzzle from the last three weeks."

Rosie the Rabbit hops onto the first pad. "Equal fractions, adding, and now multiplying!"

Bennie the Bear sits on the bank with his basket of stones.

"Take each puzzle one step at a time," he says. "Draw strips if they help."

Freddy winks. "And if you miss one, just hop back and try again!"

Game 1: Equal and compare

FIND THE EQUAL FRACTION OR THE SIGN
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
3/4 = ?/8
2/5 = ?/10
2/3 ? 3/4
5/10 ? 1/2
5/8 ? 3/5

Game 2: Add and subtract

FIND THE SUM OR DIFFERENCE
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
3/8 + 4/8 = ?
9/10 - 4/10 = ?
2 1/4 + 1 2/4 = ?
3 3/5 - 1 1/5 = ?

Game 3: Multiply

FIND THE PRODUCT
  • Read the question.
  • Tap your answer.
4 × 2/5 = ?
3 × 1/6 = ?
2 × 3/4 = ? × 1/4
Freddy hops 2/3 meter, 3 times. How many meters does he hop?

Game 4: True or false?

SentenceTrue or false?
2/3 = 4/6?
3/8 + 4/8 = 7/16?
4 × 2/5 = 8/5?
3/4 > 2/3?
6/6 = 1?
WHY THIS EXERCISE3/8 + 4/8 is 7/8. When we add like fractions, the denominator stays the same.
Try it
Take one giant step like Freddy. Then take a half step.
Take 6 half steps in a row.
How many giant steps is that? 6 × 1/2 = 3.
Now take 3 steps that are each 3/4 of a giant step.
Draw a lily pad for each game. Write one fraction fact on each pad.
