More than or times as many?
// Multiplication as comparing

Wednesday: More than or times as many?

Lucy, Rosie and Samantha go berry picking near the stream.

Lucy picks 4 berries and puts them in her tiny green backpack.

"I picked 3 more than Lucy," says Rosie the Rabbit.

"I picked 3 times as many as Lucy," says Samantha.

Lucy tilts her head. "Do you two have the same amount?"

Bennie chuckles. "Those words sound alike, but they mean different things."

"More than means add. Times as many means multiply."

Learn it: two kinds of comparing

3 more than 4 is 4 + 3 = 7. Rosie has 7 berries.

3 times as many as 4 is 3 × 4 = 12. Samantha has 12 berries.

The words tell us whether to add or multiply.
