Thursday: The tall pine and the little sapling

Chris the Coyote leans back against a mossy rock.

"Lucy once rested on a little sapling that was only 6 feet tall," he says.

"Next to it stood an old pine. It was 48 feet tall."

"Lucy looked up and up. How many saplings tall is that pine?"

"Bennie said, think of it this way: 6 times what number is 48?"

"Lucy counted by sixes on her seven spots and one petal."

"Eight! The pine is 8 times as tall as the sapling."

Chris smiles. "Dividing helps us compare, too."

Story: How many times as tall?

The pine is 48 feet. The sapling is 6 feet.

We write 6 × ? = 48.

48 ÷ 6 = 8, so the pine is 8 times as tall.
