Tuesday: Read and write big numbers

Bennie finds an old sign at the trail gate.

It says the trail had 305,240 visitors since it opened.

Ferris tilts his head. "How do I even say that number?"

Bennie points to the comma in the middle.

"The comma splits the number into groups of three digits," he says.

"Read the first group, then say thousand at the comma."

"Then read the last group like a normal number."

Ferris tries it slowly, and his tail swishes with pride.

Learn it: three ways to write a number

Standard form uses digits: 305,240.

Number name: three hundred five thousand two hundred forty.

Expanded form adds the value of each digit: 300,000 + 5,000 + 200 + 40.

A zero holds a place, so we skip it in the name and in expanded form.
